Majestic Mule Deer Bucks by Alturas Catholic Church

Photos by Lea Huetteman

In the afternoon, a visit to the Alturas Catholic Church offers a unique wildlife spectacle. Several stunning Mule deer bucks can be observed resting nearby, their antlers still covered in velvet. Modocer Lea Huetteman shares “I am always amazed at the different size and shapes of the various antlers and how the size changes with each year”. Each year, their antlers vary in size and shape, reflecting the natural growth patterns of these graceful animals.

During the hot weather, the deer seek refuge on the north side of the stone church, where the cooler shade provides relief from the sun. The lush green grass in this area offers a comfortable spot for them to relax until the temperatures drop around 5 p.m. This tranquil setting not only highlights the beauty of the church but also provides a serene backdrop for observing these remarkable creatures.
