Annual Rotary Kids’ Fish Derby Coming

Excitement is building in Alturas as the Annual Kids’ Fish Derby approaches, scheduled for Saturday, May 11, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Pine Creek Reservoir near Alturas. Organized by the Alturas Rotary Club, this beloved community event promises a morning filled with fun, food, and the thrill of fishing. Children ages 12 and under are invited to participate and are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles and bait. Registration will open at 8:30 am on the day of the event, with the fishing action kicking off promptly at 9:00 am.

Prizes will be awarded in several categories to recognize the young anglers’ achievements. Highlights include bicycles for the first fish caught, the biggest fish by weight, and the most fish caught (up to a limit of 5). Additionally, there will be prizes awarded through a drawing, including for the coloring contest.

The Alturas Rotary Club extends their appreciation to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Service for stocking the reservoir ahead of the derby. They also thank the community for refraining from fishing at the reservoir prior to the event, ensuring a plentiful supply of fish for the young participants.

In addition to the fishing excitement, attendees and their families can enjoy a complimentary hot dog lunch as a token of appreciation for their participation.

For those planning to attend, directions to Pine Creek Reservoir are as follows: turn east at Dorris Park and travel on County Road 56 until reaching County Road 57. Continue on County Road 57 until the pavement ends, then proceed along the gravel road until reaching the reservoir. The total distance from the park is approximately 10 miles.
