Double meteor showers light up Modoc County’s western sky on July 29–30

Double Meteor Showers to Illuminate the Sky: How to Watch the Alpha ...

Stargazers in Modoc County have a rare celestial event to look forward to tonight: two meteor showers peaking simultaneously in the western and southern skies. The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids will overlap from late evening through dawn, offering a visible display even in northern California.

The Southern Delta Aquariids typically produce about 20 meteors per hour at peak—visible between midnight and 3 a.m.—as they radiate from the constellation Aquarius. The Alpha Capricornids, though less frequent (5 to 10 meteors per hour), are known for bright fireballs appearing slightly earlier in the night, rising from the Capricornus constellation. Together, observers may see as many as 25 meteors per hour, conditions permitting.

Viewing conditions are favorable: the moon is in its waxing crescent phase and will set early, leaving darker skies ideal for stargazing. To spot the showers, find a dark location away from lights, lie back, and scan the southern to western horizon with a full view of the sky. No telescope or binoculars are needed. Residents in Modoc County are encouraged to take advantage of the region’s low light pollution. Local high-elevation areas and rural off-grid sites are especially suited for viewing. Allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark before looking up.
