Modoc Food Drive Schedule Changes Amid Rising Grocery Prices

By: Shaelene Tims

When TEACH recently announced that its food drive would change from weekly to monthly, Modoc County residents quickly voiced their concerns on social media. Many speculated that federal budget cuts were to blame—echoing a nationwide conversation about reduced support for food assistance programs.

However, TEACH clarified to the Modoc Record that the actual reason for the change is for less dramatic but no less impactful: rising grocery prices.

Over the past year, grocery prices across the nation increased significantly, according to data from the USDA’s Economic Research Service. Between early 2024 and early 2025, the overall cost of food climbed by 2.6%, with prices for groceries specifically jumping 1.9%. California residents saw even steeper hikes in certain staples; eggs, for instance, reaching record highs.

These escalating costs have severely strained TEACH’s budget, prompting them to spend nearly half of their annual resources within just the first few months of the year. To ensure they can sustain their assistance throughout 2025, the nonprofit made the tough choice to scale back on food distribution frequency.

While federal policy debates continue at a national level, Modoc’s current predicament is primarily influenced by local economic factors. In response, the Modoc Record is stepping in by hosting a canned food drive aimed at bolstering TEACH’s efforts. From May 1st through May 10th, residents who bring two cans of food will receive a free copy of the Modoc Record.

Community involvement remains critical. TEACH representatives stressed to the Modoc Record that every donated item can significantly ease the burden on local families experiencing food insecurity. They also emphasize the importance of donating food that is within date or very close to its expiration to ensure that contributions are immediately usable. Through collective action, Modoc County residents can directly help neighbors in need during these challenging financial times.
