Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Richvale, will hold a town hall meeting in Alturas on Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at The Niles.

The seven-term congressman, who represents California’s 1st District, said the event will give residents a chance to ask questions, share concerns and discuss issues important to the region.

“This is a chance for you to voice your concerns, ask questions and discuss the issues that matter most to our region,” LaMalfa said in a news release. “I look forward to hearing your input.”

LaMalfa’s last two town halls, held Monday in Chico and Red Bluff, drew large crowds and pointed questions about health care, tariffs and veterans’ services. In Chico, attendees reported the event turned heated, with frequent interruptions, red “disapproval” cards held up by attendees and shouts from the audience. In Red Bluff, attendees reported the tone was less volatile but many goers voicing dissatisfaction with his positions on social programs and veterans’ care.

At recent meetings, people in attendance have pressed LaMalfa on topics ranging from cuts to Medicaid and Medicare to tariffs affecting small businesses and farm operations. Some residents have raised concerns about access to VA services, the closure of local Social Security offices and the impact of policy decisions on rural communities.

Community members in Modoc County are encouraged to attend if they want to raise questions, share feedback or learn more about LaMalfa’s work in Congress — especially on issues specific to the region such as water rights, broadband access and wildfire recovery.

No large signs, banners, signs with sticks, or weapons will be allowed inside the venue, according to the news release.
