113 Years Ago – 1911

PLANS FOR laying of the cornerstone for the new public school building (high school) have been loaned to the Masonic Lodge. Guest speakers are being contacted while work goes on. Attendance in the Alturas schools is only 51 percent because of colds going around. . . Both the Niles and Modoc hotels in Alturas have been filled even before the train arrives. This has meant many have had to seek private residences for overnight lodging.

88 Years Ago – 1936

OPENING DAY Charles Asher caught a 9 lb. 10 oz. loch at Clear Lake. Mrs. Jeff Kelly still holds the record for the largest fish ever recorded in Modoc – – a 15-pound rainbow trout taken in Big Sage in 1934. . .  Mr., Lewis’s spring music concert was a disappointment. It was hoped that the concert would raise money for band uniforms for the high school. But there weren’t enough townspeople present to buy even one uniform.

63 Years Ago – 1961

JOHN DOLEZAL has reopened the Nile Theatre in Alturas following a six-month closure. The first movie will be “North to Alaska”. . . Recy Hicks has opened a laundry mat in Alturas that has been named “Econowash”. . . The Alturas 20-30 Club has taken on a project to build a new recreation and baseball field on Fourth Street and on property owned by the school district.

64 Years Ago – 1966

CURTIS FRENCH has been named as the new principal of Modoc High. . . A drive has been launched to save the Alturas Scout Hall and transplant it on Fourth Street. Otherwise, it will be demolished by the county. . . Erin Forrest has proposed that an equal harvest of the Interstate Deer Herd be regulated between California and Oregon, with each side being issued an equal number of permits to take antlerless deer.

53 Years Ago –

1971A NEW ENTERPRISE, Modoc Motor Parts, has been opened in Alturas on Hwy 299. The new store will be managed by Russ Milton. . . Dick Ehrhardt has been named general chairman of the 1971 Modoc Fandango. . . Arrowhead Golf Course has been leased by Bert Klingerman from owner John Briggs.
