Modoc Farmers Markets Start July 13, Offer EBT for Local Food

By: Ary West

The eagerly awaited Modoc Certified Farmers Markets are set to open their 2024 season on Saturday, July 13th in Cedarville from 9am to noon, followed by Alturas the next Saturday at the Veterans’ Memorial Park, also from 9am to noon. Celebrating over a decade of fostering community and supporting local agriculture, these markets are a summer staple in Modoc County. The Cedarville Market will take place at the corner of Bonner and Main St, and the Alturas Market will take place at the Veterans’ Memorial Park.

“Our farmers markets are a cornerstone of community connection and local sustainability,” explains Ary West, Farmers Market Manager. “This is one of the very few places in Modoc County that residents can use their CalFresh benefits for food grown or raised right here, purchasing right from the producer. We’re also excited to offer Market Match, which ensures that every dollar stretches further, supporting both our local economy and community health.”

Shoppers of all kinds are invited to visit the farmers market of their choice to support local producers and enjoy the ambiance of a relaxed, enjoyable community gathering while shopping. In addition to fresh produce and meat, each market features a Kids Zone, live music, and the opportunity to engage directly with farmers. “It’s not just about shopping,” West explains. “Our markets are where you can learn about the origin of your food and the dedication that goes into each farm’s products.”

Volunteers are encouraged to join in the market experience by assisting with setup, operations, and breakdown. “We would love help setting up the market, breaking it down afterwards, and everything in between. Volunteering is a great way to contribute to our local food system, and it’s fun to be part of the action!” West invites individuals to reach out and get involved.

Farmers Markets will continue this year through September. The market schedule is on the Modoc Harvest website (www.modocharvest.org), on their Facebook page, and here in the Modoc Record. In the event that Veterans’ Memorial Park is not finished with refurbishing on Alturas market days, patrons can check the Modoc Harvest Facebook page, call Modoc Harvest at 456-6362, or email farmersmarket@modocharvest.org.
