Modoc High School Drives Change with ‘Every 15 Minutes’ Program: Educating Students on the Dangers of Drinking and Driving

STUDENTS ACTED out a drunk driving accident in 2019, with a full response from fire, law and medical services. An assembly will be held where mock obituaries are read, a student is pulled from class every 15 minutes to mimic the statistics that someone dies from drunk driving every 15 minutes in the United States. The event is very emotional and impactful for students, staff and the community.

Driving Change: Modoc High School prepares for ‘Every 15 Minutes’ Program

Modoc is proud to announce that it will be hosting the “Every 15 Minutes” program on April 29 and 30. Modoc High School and Surprise Valley High School will participate in Alturas.  This powerful two-day event aims to educate students about the dangers of drinking and driving, emphasizing the importance of making safe choices behind the wheel.

The program was last hosted in Modoc County five years ago and features realistic simulations of a drunk driving accident, including emergency response procedures and the consequences of impaired driving. Through impactful presentations and interactive experiences, students will gain a deeper understanding of the devastating effects of alcohol-related accidents. A video of the event will be created and shared with students and the community.

The Alturas CHP office has been leading the efforts and Modoc High School received a $10,000 grant from them to help offset costs. Hosting the event costs approximately $15,000. The planning committee consists of Alturas CHP, Modoc High School, Modoc County Office of Education, Alturas Police Department, City of Alturas Fire  and Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE).

In order to make this event a success, the Committee is seeking donations to support the program. Contributions can be sent to Dominique DeMoss, Modoc High School at 900 N. Main Street, Alturas, CA 96101. Your generosity will directly benefit the students and help create a meaningful learning experience that could save lives. Every student and staff will receive a t-shirt with Sponsors names advertised on the back.

“We’re working together to empower our students to make responsible choices and prevent alcohol-related tragedies in our community. We believe that the ‘Every 15 Minutes’ program is not just an event, but a transformative experience for our students. They are witnessing firsthand the consequences of drunk driving. Our goal is not just to educate but to inspire them to become responsible drivers and hold each other accountable,” said Modoc High School Principal Kristen Budmark.
