As the camping season draws near, visitors to Modoc National Forest are urged to exercise responsible recreation, with new restrictions set to take effect to safeguard the forest’s natural resources.
Starting Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 12 A.M., camping activities will be curtailed in the forest to minimize potential damage. The restrictions, outlined in Forest Order Number 09-24-01, target long-term or semi-permanent occupancy on national forest service lands within the Modoc National Forest.
According to the order, campers in developed campgrounds are prohibited from staying for more than 14 days in a calendar year at any single campground. Similarly, those utilizing undeveloped campsites within a single Ranger District cannot exceed 14 days, with a cap of 28 days per calendar year for undeveloped sites across the forest.
However, certain individuals are exempt from these restrictions. Holders of Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48, which exempts them from the order, are among those exempt. Additionally, federal, state, or local officers, as well as members of organized rescue or fire-fighting forces, are exempt when performing official duties.
A copy of the Forest Order is available for review at all Modoc National Forest offices and on the forest’s website.
The measures aim to balance recreational enjoyment with the preservation of Modoc National Forest’s ecological integrity. By raising awareness of these regulations, forest officials hope to ensure a harmonious coexistence between visitors and the environment.
