Potential Return of Rainbow Gathering

Rainbow Group considers gathering in Southern Warner Mountains

Rainbow Gathering considers South Warner Mountains of Modoc County, California as their event destination, the Rainbow Gathering is also considering three potential locations for its upcoming event, including sites in Washington and Oregon. A final decision is anticipated during the Spring Council meeting planned for the first two weeks of June. The Rainbow Gathering plans to take place from July 1st-July 7th.

The “Rainbow Family” has been around since the 1970s and brings together communities annually at various public lands across our country. Modoc County National Forest had hosted the 1984 and 2004 Rainbow Gathering events in the past. The Rainbow Family prides themselves on being about peace and love and unity.

Despite its reputation for fostering community experiences, the Rainbow Gathering has faced scrutiny and controversy in the past.

Modoc Sheriff Tex Dowdy, points to the group’s past gatherings, particularly their last visit in 2004, which was spoiled by concerns over increased crime, environmental degradation, and the abandonment of vehicles. Sheriff Dowdy has emphasized the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office’s unwavering commitment to upholding the law and ensuring public safety. He expressed plans for a strong law enforcement presence before, during, and after this event if it comes to plan, with a zero-tolerance approach toward any potential disruptions or damages caused by the gathering.

Past Rainbow Gatherings have drawn crowds of up to 2,000 participants, prompting collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the Modoc National Forest. The forest authorities have pledged cooperation with the Sheriff’s Office, announcing the formation of a National Incident Management Team to address any eventualities once the event’s location is finalized.

As preparations intensify, the delicate balance between honoring the group’s right to assemble and safeguarding the local community’s interests remains paramount. With effective planning and coordination, stakeholders aim to navigate potential challenges while facilitating a peaceful and orderly event.

As the potential arrival of the Rainbow Gathering looms, our community can seek comfort in that our Modoc County Sheriff’s Department is prepared to ensure the safety and security of the community. While the event has not been officially announced, local authorities are ready to take control and manage any situations that may arise, reassuring residents with their proactive approach.
