Exciting Changes at Modocrecord.com: Your Guide to What’s New!

Hello Modocrecord.com readers,

We’ve been making significant updates to our website over the past few weeks, and we wanted to keep you informed about these changes.

First, a little history: our original site was built in the late 90s or early 2000s. It contained two crucial elements for our readers:

1. Subscriber/Subscription database
2. PDFs of recent publications from the current year

Here’s what you need to know about these changes:

 Subscription Database
We are manually activating each subscriber in our new system. This means our team is going through every name and email to ensure your subscription is active. If you’ve forgotten your password, don’t worry – you can request a reset.

When we activate your account, you’ll receive an email stating you’ve been charged $25 and will auto-renew in a year. **Please note:** you have not been charged; this is just part of the activation process.

As usual, we have a list of all subscribers, their emails, and renewal dates. You’ll receive a renewal notice a month before your subscription expires, giving you 30 days to renew via our website. Automatic renewal can be canceled at any time, and signing up this year doesn’t mean you’re committed to next year.

PDFs of Older Newspapers
Unfortunately, we cannot transfer PDFs from January to April 2024 to the new system. However, all content from February 2024 onward is available on our site as individual stories. You can search for these stories using keywords or names.

The previous owners only kept the current year’s PDFs on the site and then transferred them to the Alturas City Library. This practice continues. The library holds our entire archive in both paper and microfilm formats.

Since launching the new site, each newspaper in digital version is now available individually, marked with the publication date and labeled as a digital version.

 Our Commitment
We appreciate your support. To thank you, we’re offering two months of free access to all current subscribers. All site content will be free for the next two weeks. Starting August 1, 2024, we’ll return to requiring a subscription for access, except for videos and select content, which will remain free.

Obituaries will only be in the newspaper, with names posted online. The sheriff blotter and booking information will also remain print-only. By keeping these names out of the digital version, we ensure that a single mistake doesn’t follow someone forever, as they won’t be searchable online. However, if a major crime or something of significant public interest occurs, we will post names, photos, and other relevant information online.

Thank you for your continued support. Please send us tips, keep us informed, and help us be the best local community outlet for you and our community!

Best regards,
The Modoc Record Team
