Chip Seal Project to Begin On State Route 299 in Modoc County

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans District 2) and American Pavement Systems, Inc. are preparing to begin work on the Schaffer Mt. Chip Project on State Route 299 in Modoc County. The $1.14 million project will provide an asphalt rubber chip seal on SR 299 near Canby, from just east of County Road 85 to 1.7 miles west of the junction with State Route 139. The project will also provide areas of asphalt concrete dig outs with grinding and the removal and replacement of thermoplastic markings and striping. No work will be conducted on bridge decks in the project area.

Construction activities are currently planned to start on Monday, August 5th. Motorists will encounter one-way traffic control with up to 15-minute delays, Monday through Friday during daytime hours. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive carefully in and around construction areas, follow speed limit reductions in place, and allot extra time for delays. Please note the potential for loose gravel during chip placement operations. The project is currently anticipated to be completed by early September.

Construction projects are subject to changes without prior notice. Caltrans and its contractors do our best to keep the public informed. To stay up to date on highway projects, please follow us on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). Project information can also be found on the District 2 webpage. The public can also call (530) 225-3426 during working hours or send an email to D2PIO@dot.ca.gov.
